Eton Mess

June is here, and time for some lighter summer desserts.  If you are wondering what an Eton Mess is, it is the best kind of mess.  Bits of meringue, whipped cream and fresh fruit (usually strawberries) make up a delightfully airy dessert with all those textures balancing out into the perfect bite.  How this British concoction came about is a bit of a debate.  The most accepted version involves an Eton v Harlow cricket match in the late 19th century and a dropped meringue/strawberry/cream pudding  All I know for sure is that it is quite scrumptious.  And easy, and the perfect summer dessert.

Brown Butter Nectarine Cake with Bourbon Whipped Cream Frosting

Hooray for stone fruit season!! Brown butter and roasted nectarines are the two star ingredients of these cake layers. They get slathered in a whipped cream frosting that has hints of brown sugar, bourbon and a little mascarpone to add that slight tang to balance it all out. This is summer. This is potluck. This is leftover snack at midnight. This is, yes please, I will take a second slice.

Thanksgiving Breakfast – Apple Cinnamon Breakfast Cobbler with Cinnamon Maple Whipped Cream

 

As I’ve mentioned before, Thanksgiving is my favorite food holiday.  This is the holiday that I scour my favorite food magazines, scroll through my favorite food blogs and visit numerous websites looking for the perfect new recipe to take to our family get together.  We, like so many other families, spend the night together Wednesday night so Thursday morning is literally wall to wall food from the moment we wake up till the moment we go to sleep that night.  In years past, Carmi and I have shared some family favorites, exciting new side dishes as well as an entire series on using up those leftovers.  This month we will be sharing some delicious breakfast options that don’t take a lot of time or effort but will still wow and impress your family Thanksgiving morning.  Of course, if your family is staying for several days, these next few posts would also work perfectly for the weekend after turkey day.
